In Nyamasheke District, Western Rwanda, they are in a special Operation of hunting wild dogs that eat people’s livestock, at the beginning about 62 have been killed.
It was after a while that the people of sectors including Kagano, Kanjogo, Bushekeri and Rangiro were calling for a help to stop wild dogs which attacked and killed their domestic animals.
These residents also expressed concern that these wild dogs could bite their children while going to school, which could cause them some diseases as these dogs are not vaccinated.
When in November 2023, those residents raised their voices to talk about the issue, the District administration said that they are going to find out how to kill them because they are not vaccinated and may have diseases.
At that time, it was announced that dog owners are going to be required to protect and monitor them in order to protect the safety of the people.
In an interview with IMVAHO NSHYA had with Mayor of Nyamasheke District, Mupenzi Narcisse, he confirmed that after realizing that these dogs are causing insecurity for the people, measures were taken to control them.
Mayor Mupenzi said that in the month of December, 42 dogs were killed in Kanjongo sector and 20 were killed in Kagano.
He said: “Those who are not domesticated at home, they are wandering, you will not find anyone to blame them because they do not have their owners, they are wandering themselves. Therefore, those wandering around will be protected from people.”
He said that they are encouraging people to manage domesticated dogs, protect them and prevent them from wandering in the community and vaccinate them.
The Mayor of Nyamasheke District said that these dogs are killed professionally and there are good methods so that they do not cause problems after being killed.
Wild dogs in the district attack livestock including goats and sheep and eat mostly children and other residents.
