RDF MOURNS THE DECEASED PEACEKEEPER OF RWANDAN

The attack on United Nations (UN) peacekeepers in the Central African Republic, which claimed the life of a Rwandan soldier, has been denounced by the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF).

The deceased soldier was a Rwandan who was a member of the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSCA) in the Central African Republic.

According to reports, the soldier was killed by armed individuals during an attack that happened 3 km (1.86 miles) from Sam- Ouandja, Haute- Kotto Province, North Eastern, in CAR, on July 10, 2023, during an attack on a patrol of the troops.

The Rwanda Defence Force expressed its great sorrow for the passing of a Rwandan peacekeeper and its condemnation of the violent crime.

The RDF issued a statement on July 11, 2023, in which it stated that it “firmly condemns the attack and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the fallen peacekeeper.” In accordance with the MINUSCA mandate and the other peacekeeping missions that our forces are assigned to, “RDF peacekeepers remain committed to the protection of civilians.”

After a weak peace agreement was negotiated in February 2019 between the government and 14 armed groups, violence against peacekeepers has continued in the Central African Republic (CAR), but the situation is still unstable because large portions of the country are still ungoverned.

Three United Nations soldiers from Bangladesh were murdered and a number of others were hurt by a roadside bomb in the northwest of the CAR last year.

UN peacekeepers were sent to the CAR in 2014, and as of 2022, the mission had 14,200 participants and 147 fatalities.
