Despite a recent ceasefire signed between the M23 rebel group and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government, with Qatar’s mediation, fighting has resumed in North and South Kivu.
Two days after the M23-DRC deal, Rwanda and DRC also signed a “Declaration of Principles” in Washington to reinforce peace efforts. However, according to Radio Okapi, the ceasefire has failed to hold.
On Sunday, M23 forces captured Kaziba in Walungu Territory following heavy clashes with Wazalendo militias and FARDC troops. The rebels are now advancing toward Minembwe, aligning themselves with local groups after the reported death of Twirwaneho’s leader, Makanika.
M23 is also consolidating control in Kabare and Kalehe areas. Analysts say mutual distrust between the parties is undermining dialogue efforts, prolonging instability in eastern Congo.
