Each year, Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) offers a valuable opportunity to teachers who have not yet completed university education (those holding A2 or A1 qualifications), enabling them to pursue and complete their university degrees.
Previously, applicants were required to physically submit their documents to district offices, but in recent years, the process has been fully digitized through the Teacher Management Information System (TMIS). This shift to an online platform has significantly streamlined the application process, making it more accessible and efficient for teachers across the country.
Selected teachers are allowed to continue receiving their monthly salaries while pursuing their studies. Additionally, they enjoy the same benefits granted to university scholarship recipients enrolled at the University of Rwanda’s College of Education. Remarkably, upon successful graduation, these teachers are typically employed directly at the A0 qualification level without having to sit for the usual recruitment examinations.
This year, REB once again opened applications for this program, but with a notable change: only teachers specializing in Science, Languages, and Early Childhood and Lower Primary Education (ECLPE/ECE) were eligible to apply. Initially, this restriction led many to believe that the number of applicants would be low. However, according to data already collected in the TMIS system, an impressive 2,035 teachers submitted their applications.
Despite the high number of applicants, only 300 teachers will ultimately be selected. Of these, 240 slots are reserved for those holding A2 qualifications, while the remaining 60 slots are allocated to those with A1 qualifications.
Another significant update to this year’s process is the introduction of an entrance examination. For the first time, applicants will have to take and pass a test before being admitted into the program. This additional step aims to ensure that only the most qualified and motivated candidates are given the opportunity to advance their education.
As of now, REB has not yet announced the exact date when the list of successful candidates will be released. Nevertheless, work is reported to be progressing rapidly, and official communication is expected in the near future.
The initiative continues to be an important effort by the Rwandan government to strengthen the education sector by equipping teachers with higher qualifications, ultimately improving the quality of education nationwide.
