Nyarugenge beats Gatsibo in Umurenge Kagame Cup Final 2023

The 2023 Umurenge Kagame Cup event finished on Sunday, June 25, in Huye District, Southern Province, by honoring the weekend’s outstanding performers in various sports disciplines.

The 2023 tournament edition was officially begun on January 7 in Busasamana Sector, Rubavu District, Western Province, with the purpose of promoting “good governance,” talents, and good health.

In 2006, Umurenge Kagame Cup competitions were started. The contests began with solely football games for men and women from various industries across the country.

Following the second phase of decentralization, contests were launched as a key conduit for mobilizing residents and new local authorities to embrace the reforms and changes brought about by decentralization.

New disciplines like as athletics, volleyball, basketball, sitting volleyball, cycling, jumping, and ‘Ikibuguzo’ were added over time.

After a weekend of exciting finals in many sports disciplines, the tournament finished with a football final match between Gatsibo District’s Nyarugenge Sector and Ngarama Sector. Nyarugenge won the championship after defeating Gatsibo 4-2 in the final match.

Among those in attendance were Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) CEO Dr. Usta Kaitesi, Minister of Local Government Jean Claude Musabyimana, and newly-elected head of the local football regulatory body (Ferwafa) Alphonse Munyatwali.

RGB CEO Dr. Usta Kaitesi, who closed the event at Huye Stadium, was impressed by how the finals played out over the course of two days.

“The tournament was good; people from all districts competed well.” As organizers, we appreciate the districts’ dedication and are overjoyed,” Kaitesi said.

Kaitesi noted that the Umurenge Kagame Cup Competitions are in line with the Rwandan government’s people-centered administration and that the event has the potential to create great athletes who can play for top teams at the national level.

“Our government is committed to having healthy and empowered citizens who can work for their own socioeconomic development while also contributing to national development.” The tournament’s goal is to bring people together and encourage them to play and enjoy themselves.
Our governance prioritizes citizens, thus the people have benefited and you can see the progress.
